The Garden

Proposal for Walk & Talk’s 2020 Pavilion
Location: Azore, Portugal
Client: W&T Arts Festival

This proposal is for new gathering space for creation and experimentation in the various artistic fields. The edgeless cloud-like pavilion accommodates various activities and events that welcomes the people and neighborhood of Azores community.

The pavilion has 3 circular layers. The outer layer is covered space such as a bar and canteen. The open to sky inner circle consists of the garden with seat stools and performance stage. This concentric organization allows flexible and focused layout for various activities and events with movable furniture. The sectional variation allows to divide space by function and activity as needed. It also helps the pavilion to operate in a seamless network rather than enclosed wall.

PVC vinyl sheet is very flexible and self-structured with adequate thickness. Its creamy opaqueness will cloud like effect with its lightness, and function as a good shade device and rain protection. Any kind of pattern and color can be added for more special effects. Plus, a transparent sheet will give maximum openness. The height and width adjustable painted 60mm radius poles and support system is suitable for a lightweight canopy material. It is economical and minimizes impacts on the existing site. Concentric shape allows flexible, but very focused layout at the same time. Combining with movable systematic furniture, it accommodates various events and activities as required. The bars, seating tables, chairs, and miscellaneous equipment are stored in movable cabinets and storage with wheels that are normally used as partitions.

The courtyard garden is the center for meeting, gathering, rest, performance and emptiness. It is surrounded by the layer of covered spaces, but no walls. Visitors will discover a small nature which is filled with various local plants.
